What Are the Benefits of Consuming Olive Oil Daily?

If you’ve ever wandered through our Fort Collins shop during Foodie Walk, you’ve probably noticed something pretty quickly: we are very serious about olive oil… but not in a stuffy, intimidating way.

At Rocky Mountain Olive Oil, olive oil lives everywhere in our world. It’s drizzled over gluten-free bread while we’re making dinner after CrossFit. It’s whisked into dressings for family taco nights. It gets poured over roasted vegetables, blended into marinades, tossed with popcorn, and almost daily eaten straight from a shot glass because honestly? Good olive oil is that good and that good for you.

And over the years, one question keeps coming up from customers standing at our tasting bar “Is olive oil actually healthy enough to consume every day?” The answer is a very enthusiastic yes. In fact, daily olive oil consumption has been associated with heart health, brain health, inflammation support, healthier aging, digestive wellness, and even improved longevity. But not all olive oils are created equal - not by a longshot - and that distinction matters far more than most people realize.

If you’ve been wondering whether adding olive oil to your daily routine is worth it, this guide breaks down the real science, how to use it, and why high-quality extra virgin olive oil deserves a permanent spot in your kitchen.

Why Olive Oil Is Considered One of the Healthiest Foods in the World

There’s a reason olive oil sits at the center of the Mediterranean diet — one of the most researched eating patterns for long-term health and longevity. High-quality extra virgin olive oil contains:

  • Monounsaturated fats
  • Polyphenols and antioxidants
  • Oleocanthal (a natural anti-inflammatory compound)
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K
  • Plant compounds that help fight oxidative stress

Those compounds work together in ways that researchers continue to study. And unlike trendy wellness products that disappear after six months on TikTok, olive oil has thousands of years of history behind it. The key phrase there, though, is high-quality olive oil.

A dusty bottle that’s been sitting under fluorescent grocery store lights for two years isn’t the same thing as fresh, ultra-premium olive oil that’s been carefully sourced and tested.

That’s why we’re obsessive about freshness at Rocky Mountain Olive Oil. Our extra virgin olive oils are sourced from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres so we can provide fresh harvest oils year-round instead of oils that have been aging in warehouses.

If you’re looking for a good place to start, our ultra-premium extra virgin olive oils collection is where the magic happens.

Benefit #1: Olive Oil Supports Heart Health

This is probably the benefit most people have heard about first. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which has been associated with healthier cholesterol levels and cardiovascular support. Research surrounding Mediterranean-style diets consistently shows lower rates of heart disease among populations consuming olive oil regularly.

What makes olive oil especially interesting is that it doesn’t just replace less healthy fats - it also brings anti-inflammatory compounds to the table. That matters because chronic inflammation is connected to many long-term health concerns.

One of our favorite easy swaps? Replacing processed bottled dressings with homemade vinaigrettes using fresh olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Our family does this constantly because it’s fast, tastes dramatically better, and honestly makes salads way less depressing. A few customer favorites:

  • Garlic Infused Olive Oil - this is hands down the most versatile infused olive oil we have at the shop and it's the most used in our household. We have an entire fusti of it that we pour from. If you think about it, garlic goes in almost every genre of food, so it works with almost everything.
  • Whole Fruit Eureka Lemon Fused Olive Oil - my go to baking oil when I'm making something fruity. I also love it to cook pancakes with.
  • Baklouti Green Chili Fused Olive Oil - Shaun's favorite. We use this on popcorn and Latin American dishes, which is one of my favorite genres of food to cook.
  • Harissa Infused Olive Oil  - great for making things a little spicy and very interesting. A few customer favorites:

Benefit #2: Olive Oil May Help Reduce Inflammation

One of the most fascinating compounds in extra virgin olive oil is oleocanthal.

Oleocanthal has been studied because it behaves similarly to certain anti-inflammatory compounds. While olive oil is obviously not a medication, researchers believe this may partly explain why Mediterranean populations historically experienced strong long-term health outcomes.

Interestingly, robust olive oils often have that signature peppery throat tickle. That peppery sensation? That’s frequently associated with polyphenol content. So when customers ask us whether a peppery olive oil is “bad,” we usually laugh and say “Nope. That’s the good stuff.”

Our more robust oils tend to be favorites among customers who love bold flavor and high polyphenol intensity and know what they want in an olive oil. Robusts can come in many varietal types and countries. Some of the best ones we've had are Cobrançosas, Picuals, Hojiblancas and Reserves.

In order to remain fresh, our extra virgin always rotates. We usually have south of the equator varietals in summer and fall from places like Argentina, Peru & Australia. In the winter and spring is when we get more of our north of the equator harvests from places like Portugal, Spain, California, Sicily and Greece.

Benefit #3: Olive Oil Supports Brain Health

Healthy fats matter for the brain. Emerging research continues to explore the connection between olive oil consumption, cognitive function, and healthy aging.

While no single food is a magic cure-all, olive oil remains one of the most consistently studied fats associated with long-term wellness. Honestly, this hits home for a lot of us.

Between running businesses, parenting teenagers, gymnastics schedules, sports practices, CrossFit competitions, school events, and trying to remember why we walked into the pantry in the first place, most of us are looking for sustainable ways to support overall wellness. And unlike restrictive wellness trends that disappear overnight, olive oil is realistic.

You can actually use it every single day. Drizzle it over eggs. Blend it into hummus. Pour it over roasted vegetables. Dip bread into it while hiding from your children for approximately 45 seconds of peace. That last one may be unofficial nutritional advice.

Benefit #4: Olive Oil Can Help You Feel More Satisfied After Meals

One underrated benefit of healthy fats is satiety.Meals that include healthy fats often feel more satisfying than meals built entirely around refined carbohydrates. Translation? Adding olive oil to meals can help food actually feel nourishing and enjoyable.

This is one reason Mediterranean eating patterns tend to feel sustainable rather than restrictive. Olive oil adds richness, depth, flavor, and satisfaction. A roasted vegetable tray tossed in olive oil tastes luxurious. Air-popped popcorn drizzled with olive oil and seasoning suddenly becomes the snack everyone hovers around during movie night. Fresh bread dipped into olive oil and balsamic somehow turns a random Tuesday into an event. Some of our favorite daily-use oils for easy meals:

Benefit #5: Olive Oil Is Incredibly Versatile

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is: “I bought olive oil once… and then I didn’t know what to do with it.” We are here to solve that problem. Olive oil is wildly versatile. You can use it for:

  • Roasting vegetables
  • Marinades
  • Salad dressings
  • Bread dipping
  • Grilling
  • Air frying
  • Baking
  • Pasta dishes
  • Soups
  • Popcorn
  • Finishing dishes
  • Even certain desserts

And yes — despite internet myths — you absolutely can cook with quality olive oil. In fact, we recently wrote an entire blog about frying with olive oil because that misconception refuses to die.

One of our family favorites is roasting vegetables with Whole Fruit Lemon Olive Oil. Our daughter loves spicy foods and adventurous flavors, our son inhales roasted potatoes like a competitive sport, and somehow lemon olive oil makes vegetables disappear faster than any parenting strategy we’ve ever tried.

Does Olive Oil Help With Longevity?

Research suggests diets rich in olive oil are associated with healthier aging and longevity. Again, olive oil is not a miracle product. But it is one of the most consistently supported foods in nutrition research. Part of that likely comes from its combination of:

  • Healthy fats
  • Antioxidants
  • Anti-inflammatory compounds
  • Minimal processing
  • Ability to replace more heavily processed fats

There’s also something important that often gets ignored in wellness conversations: Foods that support long-term health tend to be foods people actually enjoy eating. Olive oil makes food taste incredible. That matters. Because sustainable wellness isn’t built around punishment. It’s built around habits you can maintain for years.

How Much Olive Oil Should You Consume Daily?

Many studies examining Mediterranean diets involve around 1–4 tablespoons of olive oil daily. That doesn’t mean you need to start drinking it straight from the bottle tomorrow (although I do take. 1oz shot of the highest polyphenol olive oil we have at any given time everyday). Even small daily uses can add up naturally throughout meals, though.

A drizzle on vegetables. A vinaigrette at lunch. Olive oil in marinades. A little on sourdough. It becomes part of everyday life surprisingly quickly.

What Makes One Olive Oil Better Than Another?

This part matters. Not all olive oils are equal. When shopping for olive oil, look for:

  • Harvest freshness
  • Dark bottles that protect the oil from light
  • Proper storage
  • Ultra-premium or verified quality standards
  • Strong flavor and aroma
  • Polyphenol content when available

Fresh olive oil should smell alive. Grassy. Peppery. Bright. Fruity. Complex. If olive oil tastes flat, greasy, stale, or waxy, it’s probably old. It should give you a little burn in the back of your throat.

At Rocky Mountain Olive Oil, freshness is one of our biggest priorities because fresh olive oil simply tastes better and performs better. And honestly? Once people try truly fresh olive oil, there’s usually no going back.

Final Thoughts: Olive Oil Is One of the Simplest Daily Wellness Habits You Can Build

Nutrition can feel incredibly complicated online. One week everyone is afraid of fats. The next week someone on social media is eating nothing but raw liver and sunlight. But olive oil remains one of the rare foods that has maintained an incredibly strong reputation across both traditional culinary culture and modern nutrition research. It’s flavorful, versatile, satisfying. And backed by a tremendous amount of research.

At Rocky Mountain Olive Oil, we believe healthy food should also taste incredible. Because the habits you maintain longest are usually the ones that bring actual joy to your kitchen. And if that joy occasionally includes dipping warm bread into ridiculously fresh olive oil while hiding from your kids for a minute of silence? Honestly, we support that too.
